The Kapiti Judo Club is very fortunate to have an extremely talented and experienced group of coaches.




Norm Cook, 5th Dan (Godan) Black Belt

As well as being a 5th Dan (Godan) black belt and having held national titles in Kata, Norm is very active in judo administration and refereeing. His positions have included: Area Director, Wellington Judo Association Inc, (9 years); Vice President – New Zealand Judo Federation Inc; Manager for NZ representative teams (8 years) including world championships; representative for Judo on NZ Olympic & Commonwealth Games Association, international referee.


Lloyd Tarrant – 2nd Dan Black Belt

Lloyd, who is Paraparaumu born and bred, commenced judo 1982 in Wellington, and is a former New Zealand champion in senior mens divisions. He moved back to the coast with his family in 1990 and has been active in the club ever since.  He gained his 1st Dan Black Belt on 16/2/89 and his 2nd Dan Black Belt 25/5/01. 

 
John Hillier, 1st Dan Black Belt

John commenced Judo at New Forest Park Judo Club, Southern Hampshire, England, gaining his black belt in 2001. As a family sport his son joined him on the mat in 2002. Now in Kapiti Club both his teenage sons are enjoying the sport with their father. He enjoys competition, teaching the juniors and teenagers.


Karen Parker – 1st Dan (Shodan) Black Belt

Karen commenced judo in 1973 when her father, Des, set up the Kapiti Judo Club [Read more here]. Karen also did judo for three years while living in Sydney and found it a great sport to make friends. When returning to Paraparaumu she continued judo with her father until 1993 when he moved away. Karen then took up the reins and has managed the club ever since. She enjoys the sport for fitness and self defence.


John Adair – 1st Kyu Brown Belt

Commenced judo in 1972 in Glasgow, Scotland achieving his 1st Kyu when he was 20 years old.Taking a break at 23 and moving to NZ he rejoined the sport with his daughter at Kapiti volunteering to assist coaching the Beginners class.  He enjoys the personal strength children get from the sport.




Mark Gosnell, 1st Kyu Brown Belt

Mark commenced Judo in 1989 at the Kapiti Judo Club. He had a break from Judo for a few years then came back tot he sport with his two children. He gained his brown belt in December 2008 after many years of helping to coach the club. He enjoys the family sport atmosphere, the physical training and friendships that he continues to make.


Steven Roberts, 2nd Dan Black Belt

Commenced judo at the Henkada Club in Hamilton in 1982.  Studied in Japan for 2 ½ years and gained 2nd Dan Black Belt there.  Kyoto Universities 1st Dan tournament Champion in 1996. Currently enjoyed  helping the younger judo players to achieve their goals and seeing kids gain confidence in their ability.

 
Ian Pickersgill, 1st Kyu Brown Belt


Commenced judo in 1970 in Birmingham, England.  He has practiced judo in England and New Zealand since that time at a number of clubs.  He has had breaks when playing and coaching other rep sports and joined Kapiti Judo club in 2010 when his daughter started judo.  In 2011 he was awarded his first kyu and completed Judo NZ level 1 & 2 coaching courses.  He coaches the beginners class on Thursdays and enjoys helping individuals develop confidence, new skills and friendships whilst having fun.
